NED OVEREND TAKES URBAN CYCLOCROSS

The Urban Cyclocross Series Turkey Cross hosted by Liquid Fitness Cycling at Entradero Park in Torrance, CA was another first-rate event. The excitement at the flying bean bag turkeys being tossed for additional series points was not the only reason for the early buzz. It was also when the riders learned that Ned Overend was the starting sheet for the Elite Men 1,2,3 races. The big question was how would Deadly Negly, who is best known for his World Mountain Biking Championship Gold and Bronze in 1991, and six Norba National Mountain Biking Championship titles in 1986, 87 and 89 respectively, tackle Entradero Park’s notorious hill and the new turn with three log barriers? Ned, who raced for Specialized on a S-Works Stumpjumper Hardtail, caused a lot of damage to the younger riders throughout the race. However, Team Bearclaws Fritz Bottger took 1st, Jason Lowetz 2nd, and Ned Overend 3rd on a mountainbike.

A surprise occurred in the Masters 45+ race. Cross riders were able to beat Eddie Arnet by adding the cross-friendly triple logs. Eddie, Masters 45+ series leader, fell behind Jim Pappe (who came all-the way from Montana) and Michael Longmire to finish in 3rd. Eddie holds onto his series lead over Dave Hnatiuk.

Over 150 riders attended the day’s events, with a large turnout of Shimano Youth racers aged 12 and under. The Elite Men section was entertained once more by the return of junior Duncan Reid’s Back on Tracks Random Cash. Lyle Warner beat Brandon Gritters to win one of the cash grabs.
